It is important for you to know that the purpose
of this film is solely to provide information. It does not express an opinion, diagnosis,
recommendation of medical treatment
or consultation process
in the name of your family doctor Asthma:
Treatment and Prevention Asthma is a common chronic disease that is manifested by significant attacks of breathing difficulties of varying degrees. Treatment depends on the severity of
the disease and its characteristics. The film discusses treatments
and ways to prevent asthma. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. The severity, type and duration of treatment are determined by
several criteria. We take into consideration the
symptoms that appear during the day, symptoms and
distresses at night, the ability to perform physical
exertion and lung functions. Patients with infrequent
and mild symptoms, who do not require
hospitalization, can use the
emergency inhaler. This inhaler relaxes
the smooth muscles and enlarges
the bronchi. Most asthmatic patients have
more severe attacks and they need bronchial dilators
at more regular frequencies. These patients, and patients
with deteriorated lung function are supposed to get
anti inflammatory treatments. There are two groups
of substances used for anti-inflammatory treatments. Steroid inhalers
and Leukotriene blockers, which are a different group
of anti-inflammatory drugs. Inhalers are used for
prolonged usage and have to be used
correctly. Patients have to be
followed up, either by the family doctor or by the lung specialist. The follow ups should take place
every 3-6 months if the patient is stable, or more
frequently if there are problems. Other factors can help
prevent asthma. if a patients is allergic,
for instance, allergic to cats, it won’t help if we increase
the dosage of his medications, the cat should be
removed from the house. It is important not to smoke
around asthma patients and even more important
for the asthma patient not to smoke. This means all types
of smoking: cigarettes, water pipes and any
other type of smoking. Viral diseases may cause asthma and we recommend that
asthma patients get a flu vaccination every year. Despite all this,
most asthma attacks cannot be prevented this way and the
patient needs preventative treatment. A patient on
preventative treatment is meant not to have breathing
difficulties most days, and is meant to not need
hospitalization or oral steroids. As far as I’m concerned, they can
participate in any physical activity.
