According to literature published in the Nutrition Journal, apples lower the risk for asthma
attacks and promote pulmonary health. In the Netherlands, a study involving over
13,000 participants showed that apples can positively impact lung function. The consumption of apples and pears was associated
with better lung function and a lowered risk of
COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In another study involving 2,500 Welsh men,
apple consumption had a positive impact on lung function
while taking into account the following: social class, body mass index, smoking, and exercise. Their lung
function was measured as FEV or forced expiratory volume. The results showed that those who had a
weekly consumption of five apples or more had a significantly higher FEV of 138 mL compared
to those who had no apple intake. This could be attributed to the flavonoids
present in apples. Khellin, in particular, has been known to
induce bronchodilation. 2. Cantaloupes
Otherwise known as muskmelon, cantaloupes are closely related to watermelons and cucumbers. Among the many health benefits of cantaloupes
is preventing asthma and asthma attacks. Vitamin C has
strong antioxidant properties that prevent lung damage and reduces oxidative stress. In Japan, one study involving preschool children
showed that children who had the highest vitamin C
intake had a much lesser risk for developing asthma. Vitamin C is present in most fruits, but the
USDA states that a cup of cantaloupes contains more than the
recommended daily intake of vitamin C. 3. Bananas
Aside from being good for the heart, bananas are also good for the lungs. According to a survey released
by the European Respiratory Journal, bananas have the potential to decrease wheezing in
asthmatic children. This is attributed to its potassium and antioxidant
content, which can improve lung health and function. 4. Avocadoes
Although they are categorized as vegetables in cooking, avocadoes are botanically viewed
as fruits. Avocadoes contain glutathione, which is an
antioxidant that occurs naturally in the body. This antioxidant
protects cells from damage caused by free radicals and toxins, such as histamine. Avocadoes are also a great source of healthy
fats. According to a study published in Allergology
International in 2015, plant-based fats and omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in
asthmatic patients. 5. Berries
The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends berries as an inflammation-reducing
fruit due to their mix of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Eating a variety of berries (cherries, blueberries,
blackberries, raspberries, and more) can widen the range of antioxidant consumption. 6. Pomegranates
Pomegranates are also rich in antioxidants that decrease lung inflammation. In September 2014, BMC
Research Notes published an animal study that found pomegranate juice to be associated with
a reduction in lung damage.
