(cheerful music) – This is Jill Maurer
with Your Jewelry Minute and today I’m answering the question, am I allergic to silver? The answer is no, you are
not allergic to silver. It would be very rare to
have a silver allergy, in fact I’ve never heard of one. When people are allergic to silver they’re actually allergic
to the nickel in the silver. Nickel has often been used to alloy silver and one in eight people
are allergic to nickel. What this will look like if
you’re allergic is a rash. It will be contact dermatitis. It’ll look like a rash. So, if you think you’re
allergic to silver, you’re more than likely
allergic to the nickel that has been used to alloy the silver, especially in older pieces. Today, more and more people are choosing to work
with nickel-free silver and I am one of these people. It is more expensive, but it is worth it to have nickel-free silver. I even go one step further in my designs, in my silver earrings I
put 14 karat gold posts just to seal the deal there, but if you think you have a silver allergy or if you have been allergic
to silver pieces in the past, I would suggest that you try a newer piece and you make sure that you’re looking at and trying on nickel-free silver. This has been Your Jewelry Minute. If you have a question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time. (cheerful music)

  1. I have heard this as well , being allergic to silver and now I have some insight to this. Now I can give my 5 cents (haha) to the nickel allergy. Tuesday hugs!

  2. Thanks for this great information. I never knew it’s the nickel that makes you allergic and not the silver.

  3. Hello Jill ! I wonder if that is what is going on with some of my silver it turns my wrist blackish green 😮And some of it does not! I was even thinking that some of my silver wasn’t real but it says 925 from Taxco Guerrero thanks so much for this info! Xoxo 😘

  4. Interesting info. I can only wear gold earrings in my ears 😩. I can tolerate silver for a few hours, but the only way I don’t get any reactions is with gold. My daughter is the same way, except she can wear silver permanently if she wants to with no issues.

  5. I am allergic to nickel and it limits costume jewelry that I’m able to wear. I will have to check out your nickel free jewelry. I have experienced sensitivity to 14k gold- could that have an alloy as well? I can wear 18k without any issues. With the 14k, I can tolerate it for a couple of hours and then my ears start to itch. I don’t have the same problem with bracelets or necklaces. Just earrings. Thanks for the info 💗

  6. oof you substitute 14kt gold for nickel posts… I am allergic to gold… I can do the .925 silver but I have to be careful of anything else.. I have a severe nickel allergy.. gold isnt as bad but bad enough.
