Hello everyone and welcome. In this video, we are going to explain how to properly use metered-dose inhalers or MDIs, like this one. (Ventolin is shown) Follow these steps: Shake the inhaler. Take off the cap. Keep an upright position: sit down or stand whenever possible. Breathe out all the way. Bring the inhaler to your mouth and close your lips around it, but don’t bite it. Start breathing in. Keep breathing in and, two seconds later, press the top of the inhaler. Continue breathing in for 5 more seconds or as long as you can. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as you can. If these steps are not properly followed, it is likely that your lungs won’t get enough medicine, or none at all, as most of it will stay along the way. If you use a spacer together with the inhaler, the process is easier: Shake the inhaler. Take off the cap. Put the inhaler into the spacer. Place the mask over your face. Press the top of the inhaler. Breathe normally 4 or 5 times. Spacers are advisable for any patient in need of an inhaler, but they are essential for: Children, elderly people and patients that are not able to carry out the previous steps I hope you have found this video interesting. If you have questions, remember to ask at your pharmacy.
