Did you know thumb sucking and nail-biting
might prevent allergies? According to researchers at the Dunedin School
of Medicine in New Zealand, children who suck their thumbs or bite their nails may have
a lower risk of developing allergies. The study was done to test the hygiene hypothesis:
the idea that increased hygiene is responsible for the rise in allergic diseases. Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic
illness in the United States. The study consisted of about 1000 children. When the children were 5,7,9 and 11 their
parent answered questionnaires about their thumb sucking and nail biting habits. When they were 13 and 32 researchers administered
a skin-prick test to look for any allergies. The result was that nail biters and thumb
suckers had a 30 to 40 percent risk reduction to their chances of developing allergies. Researchers went on to say that more data
is needed.
