Hi, my name is Heidi and I’m a Fairview Pharmacist. Today we’ll be talking about
the metered dose inhaler. The metered dose inhaler has three parts the cap, the mouthpiece and the canister that contains the active medication Your metered dose inhaler may look slightly
different from this one, but the same general principles apply. When you first receive a metered dose
inhaler, remove the cap and prime the inhaler by pointing it away from your face and pressing down on the canister. This will ensure that you get the right
amount of active medication every time you use your inhaler. If you don’t use the inhaler for two
weeks or more, you also want to prime it by again pointing it away from your face and
pressing down on the canister. When you’re ready to use the inhaler, uncap the inhaler and shake for ten to fifteen seconds. You then want to let as much air as possible out of your lungs and then put the inhaler in your mouth.
Press down on the inhaler, Breathe in deeply and slowly over five
seconds and that point you want to hold your
breath for 10 seconds or as long as you can hold it Exhale away from the inhaler If you need to take a second puff for your
dose, make sure to wait at least one minute before taking the second dose. When you
are done with your inhaler, you recap it. Make sure that you clean your inhaler
regularly, at least once a week. You can clean up by following the
manufacturer’s instructions for your particular metered dose inhaler.
If you have any questions please contact your pharmacist
or provider. Thank you
