$5,000 REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AN ARREST.>>Devin: IN “GOOD HEALTH,” ASTHMA IS A COMMON CONDITION IN CHILDHOOD AND MANY GROW UP ON OF IT.>>Kim: BUT WHAT ABOUT ADULTS? CAN THEY EVENTUALLY STOP THEIR MEDICATION? YES, THEY CAN.>>Dr. McGeorge: ONE THIRD OF ADULT ASTHMATICS ENDED UP NOT NEEDING MEDICATION. WHEN MANY DOCTORS SEE AN ADULT WHO IS WHEEZING, THEY’RE STARTED ON MEDICATION FOR ASTHMA AND LEFT ON IT. BUT IT’S NOT THE BEST TREATMENT AND THEY IMPROVE AND NO LONGER NEED MEDICATION OR THEY MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY DIAGNOSED. THEY LOOKED AT ADULTS IN THE PRECEDING FIVE YEARS AND REEVALUATED THEM TO SEE IF THEY STILL HAD ASTHMA. ONE THIRD DID NOT, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO STOP THEIR MEDICATIONS. SO, THERE WERE A FEW IMPORTANT LESSONS FOR EVERYONE. IF YOU’VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ASTHMA AS AN ADULT BUT DIDN’T HAVE ANY FOLLOW-UP TESTS OF AIRWAY FUNCTION, YOU MIGHT WANT TO ASK FOR TESTING TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS AND AN ONGOING NEED FOR MEDICATION. SOME OF THE PATIENTS WERE MISDIAGNOSED AND HAD OTHER VERY SERIOUS MEDICAL PROBLEMS. DEFINITIVE ASTHMA TESTING WOULD HAVE MADE THAT CLEAR WHEN THEY DIDN’T FIND ASTHMA.>>Devin: THIS IS LIKE AN EPISODE OF HOUSE. WHAT IF THEY NEVER HAD ASTHMA?>>Dr. McGeorge: A LOT OF TIMES WE DO THINGS PRESUMPTIVELY.
