O. AT THE WHITE HOUSE, STEVE HANDELSMAN, LOCAL>>Guy: IN “GOOD HEALTH,” AN EARLY SEASON IS MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THOSE WITH ASTHMA TO DEAL WITH MANAGING THEIR SYMPTOMS.>>Karen: IT IS CONFUSING, TOO, ON WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T. SOME COMMON STRAEMENTS ARE ACTUALLY MASKING THE SYMPTOMS. DR. FRANK McGEORGE IS HERE TO EXPLAIN HOW TO MANAGE ASTHMA FROM ALLERGIES.>>Dr. McGeorge: THIS WEEKEND, I SAW A TON OF ASTHMA CASES IN THE E.R., SOME RELATED TO THE HOT AND COOL DAYS WE HAD, BUT MANY WERE PEOPLE WITH KNOWN ALLERGIES THAT WERE JUST NOT WELL MANAGED. AND THAT’S THE KEY. TREATING ALLERGY-RELATED ASTHMA SHOULD AIM AT THE ALLERGY AND NO NECESSARILY THE ASTHMA. SHE DEALT WITH IT MOST OF HER LIFE.>>IT’S DREADFUL. I STRUGGLE WITH IT EVERY YEAR.>>Dr. McGeorge: BUT SHE STRUGGLES WITH SOMETHING MORE AFTER A BAD ACCIDEN HORSEBACK RIDING.>>IT EXACERBATED THE ASTHMA ATTACK THIN TIGHTNESS IN THE CHEST, DIFFICULTY BREATHING, GET CROUPY-TYPE STUFF.>>Dr. McGeorge: 50% OF PATIENTS ARE AT RISK FOR ATMATIC TENDENCIES.>>THEY CAN GET ASTHMA IF THEY GET A BAD COLD, ASTHMA IF THEY’RE IN REAL COLD AIR OR HOT HUMID AIR.>>Dr. McGeorge: AND ASTHMATICS NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR LUNG DISEASE.>>YOU NEED TO TALK TO SOMEBODY WHO HAS AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT HOW TO TREAT ASTHMA. IT’S MORE THAN JUST GIVING THEM A PUFFER AND SAYING TAKE THIS A FEW TIMES A DAY. THAT’S NOT TREATING THE CONDITION, IT’S MASKING THE SYMPTOMS.>>Dr. McGeorge: AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO CALM THE INFLAMMATION IN THE LUNGS, ALLOWING PATIENTS LIKE CAITLIN TO BREATHE MORE EASILY.>>AT LEAST IT’S A DULL ROAR INSTEAD OF A RAGING FIRE.>>Dr. McGeorge: IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT TRIGGERS ALLERGIES AND HOPEFULLY START TREATMENT BEFORE THEY FLARE UP. THAT MEANS INHALED STEROIDS OR OTHER MEDICATIONS.>>Guy: IT WILL BE NICE TO GET THE POLLEN OUT OF THE AIR.>>Dr. McGeorge: FOR EVERYBODY IT’S DIFFERENT.
