High Cholesterol and Anorexia Nervosa

Hi, I’m Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani. Today we’re
going to talk about high cholesterol levels in individuals with anorexia nervosa. Now for reasons we don’t understand,
starvation itself causes cholesterol levels to go up. That doesn’t mean you
have high cholesterol, and it certainly doesn’t mean you need to go on medicine
for high cholesterol. It’s a sign of malnutrition, so the solution is
nutrition, not managing the cholesterol itself. What I tell my patients is, if you
have anorexia nervosa, do not let anyone check a cholesterol level on you because
if it comes back [high], well meaning, but misinformed physicians are going to start
talking to you about things that they shouldn’t, like changing your diet to
lower your cholesterol. Ultimately, recovery is the solution. For more go to

  1. Thank you so much for this video! I received the very well meaning advice you mentioned. I've been weight restored for about a year, so I'm wondering how far into recovery do cholesterol levels become meaningful again?
