Kia ora, my name is Tarsha and I’m a
pharmacist from Auckland City Hospital Today, I’m going to show you how to use your spacer device with your normal inhaler Before you use your spacer device, take the cap off the inhaler Shake the inhaler device hard a few times you will need to do this before every use Put the mouthpiece of the inhaler into the hole at the end of the spacer device. If you are using the spacer for the first time, have not used it in a while or have recently cleaned and dried it, you will need to prime your device. Otherwise, the medication will stick to the inside of the spacer and it will not work for you. To prime the spacer, press the inhaler
cartridge six times and wait for a few minutes. Your device is now ready to use. To inhale your dose, you will need to place the spacer mouthpiece through your teeth and make a seal around the mouthpiece with your lips. You will need to keep your chin up You will then need to start breathing slowly through your mouth Spray one puff of your recommended dose into the spacer chamber Keep breathing in slowly breathe in as deeply as you can. Take the spacer out of your mouth and hold your breath for up to 10 seconds. Then, breathe out slowly through your mouth. After using your inhaler, you will need
to rinse your mouth out You need to do this to prevent oral thrush and also hoarseness of your voice. At least once a month, you will need to clean your spacer To do this, wash it in warm soapy water and air dry If you have any questions about
any of the inhaler devices, please go and ask your pharmacist. They’ll be more than happy to help and answer any questions.
