5 Plant species that terrorize global nations Greetings Everyone!! I am Vasanthan, today let me discuss about an important scientific topic, shall we? The moment we think about plants, all we think about is green earth, clean, nature rt? But hold on, Just as all animals, plants too compete each other to survive on this planet earth Just like cruel carnivorous animals that prey upon other animals to survive, Some plants too have evolved to be “Cruel” to kill other plants and survive If these plants are introduced into a new ecosystem, they destroy the existing ecosystem for their own survival, Lets see how these invasive foreign plants destroy our soil, I am gonna talk about top 5 invasive plant species that terrorize our lands First among Top 5 is Mesquite plant Despite there is an Indian variety of Mesquite, this foreign mesquite plant is highly invasive Botanists warn that these foreign mesquite plants are capable of penetrating their roots to 100 meters deep in search of water In English, this is commonly called as Mesquite not just in India, it is widely spread in poor African and Asian nations since it can grow fairly well in arid, desert regions, This plant poses a grave threat to their scarce water resources The origin of this plant is believed to be southern states of US such as Texas, New Mexico Not only this Mesquite plant sucks up all the ground water, it is a haven for dangerous mosquitoes as well As their pods and flowers attract mosquito species such as Anopheles, Aedis, diseases such as malaria, chickunguniya, Dengue are rampant around the presence of Mesquite plants Many drought stricken poor Indian states and African countries, initially believed that this plant can be miracle Miracle by being a good source of fodder for cattle and twigs for firewood and farmer friendly they imported and cultivated this plant voluntarily in masses Alas later they realised that, it is this mesquite plant that creates a havoc and destroys their livelihood by sucking up all their ground water Gone were those days when those poor farmers believed that this shrub is a boon to drought regions, now they realise it is this plant that causes the drought This plant is major top 5 Invasive species that destroys the ecosystem Next is the most commonly prevalent shrub “Parthenium” Even this plant has its origin from North American continent It was accidentally introduced due to the import and export of wheat from developed nations to India and poor African countries Today it has spread enormously shaping their new ecosystem for worse This native north american plant is toxic The Native Americans used to call this plant as “Devil’s weed” This weed, that grows rapidly during rainy season, has its pollen spewed by 100 metres This, thus poses a grave threat to humans This pollen triggers wheezing, allergies , asthma, as soon as it enters the bronchii infact asthma can flare up in asthmatics as they walk casually through a Parthenium field There is even a conspiracy theory that Pharma corporates of developed nations purposefully spread this parthenium in poor nations, to boost their sales of asthmatic drugs 15 Years ago, when we travel in western ghats, for eg. Mettupalayam to Coonoor One cannot miss the beautiful sight of forests But today we can witness the destruction of those beautiful forests by this creepy creeper Kudzu This creeper is notorious for growing 1 metre in length each day This ‘Kudzu” Creeper has devoured acres of forests in Amazon This native of Japan Isles creeper has spread throughout the world and has devoured scores of forestland As this creeper spreads on a tree, the tree is denied the required level of sunlight , the tree just withers This was the reason behind annihilation of forests by this creeper Southern American states like Florida has passed a separate law to ban this creeper, as they have spent of billions of dollars to eradicate this weed when compared with Parthenium, this creeper holds a positive point, that it is not a toxic plant but an edible one, and thus can be cooked But who could eat this plant as a whole, that grows 1 metre a day? The sooner our Govt and forest department realises, sooner we can rescue our western ghats from this monster creeper “Kudzu” Next, The water hyacinth, whose origin is south america, Amazon forests to be precise It’s been imported from Amazon forests to North India, erroneously assuming that it cleans the rivers Then it has spread monstrously towards all of India Not only it doesn’t wipe out the environmental hazards it also harbors dangerous mosquiteos and other insects As this weed changes the quality of water, the native water species such as fishes go extinct This weed also harbors harmful insects The Gaint African Snail is one good example Just like water hyancinth, this giant african snail is an imported organism, that has spread enormously due to this plant Schistosomiasis , a snail borne disease to humans spreads due to this hyacinth Hence from this plant, it is evident that we ought to analyse an issue thoroughly, weigh its pros and cons and then take a careful decision that is constantly monitored when implemented Next, another most prevalent shrub, Lantana As it has got beautiful flowers, it attracts many colorful butterflies Hence in Bengaluru, this plant was introduced for the purpose of horticulture only then later, the true face of this plant is revealed As its flowers are colorful and filled with honey, butterflies and bees spread their pollens tremendously throughout Hence this shrub establishes itself firm in forest lands The danger however is herbivores animals do not eat this for the animals that eats this, has to suffer terrible stomach, burning and diarrhoa like wise humans too shouldn’t eat this due to its toxicity their berries resemble blueberries, however are dangerously toxic due to their diarrhoeal properties Also this shrub has thorns in it, hence destroying this shrub is a tough task The origin of Lantana is south america in 1800s, Australia has accidentally introduced this shrub for ornamental purpose soon Australia realized what a disaster it was!! As this plant has invaded to
Australia, the entire ecosystem was shaken plant eating animals couldn’t eat this and animals who ate this suffered terribly due to which the entire ecosystem in Australia has gone for a toss!! Because of these weeds, we have lost our land, soil, forests, health, so on. let this video be an awareness video.
