to tell you the five things you should know about food allergies….. A food allergy is when a person’s immune
system responds as if a certain food is harmful to the body. The first thing a parent should know about
food allergies is..The Big 8- The most common food allergens in children are milk, egg,
wheat, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish. The second thing a parent should know is..The
Influence of age- Majority of childhood food allergies diminish with time. Cow’s milk and egg allergies are usually
outgrown during childhood and teenage years. Peanut, tree nut and shell fish allergies
are more likely to persist into adulthood. The third thing a parent should know is.. The Symptoms- Symptoms typically present within
minutes to hours after ingestion. After ingestion of a specific food, a child
may have Mild symptoms (eg, a few hives, red or swollen skin, itchy or watery eyes, runny
nose or sneezing) and/or severe life-threatening symptoms called Anaphylaxis (eg., diffuse
hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling of throat and dizziness). The fourth thing a parent should know is..Management
of established food allergy- The best management for a severe reaction is a medicine called
“epinephrine.” If your child has had severe reactions to
foods before, your doctor might have prescribed a device called an epipen. Your child should keep the epipen with him/her
at all times. In case of a severe allergic reaction, inject
the epipen and call 9-1-1. For mild food allergy symptoms, your child’s
doctor may prescribe medicine to help stop the itching and hives. The fifth thing a parent should know is.. Prevention
– Ensure your household is allergy safe for kids (Once a doctor has confirmed your child
has a food allergy, you should immediately clear every item he or she can’t eat from
your pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Also, thoroughly clean and sanitize your cooking
utensils, and kitchen You will also want to let your child’s school, friends and family know about their allergy And that’s your second opinion five! Bluecross Blueshield is a proud sponsor of
