(gentle piano music) – My name is Doctor Tran and I’ve been asked to talk about what are some common
treatments for allergies. And so one of the most
common things to do is to identify the trigger. So, take a good diary of what may be triggering your allergies, whether it’s outside inhalant pollen or indoor things like dust mites. Is your nasal congestion
really worse at nighttime? And then once we kind of identify what you may be allergic to, try some common over the
counter antihistamines, like Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec. They typically work best
about an hour before exposure to what you may be allergic to. If you have a lot of nasal
symptoms like runny nose, nasal stuffiness, sneezing, then a nasal steroid spray or even a nasal antihistamine
spray would be something that would be beneficial. And maybe all that you need, so things like over the counter
Flonase, Nasonex, Rhinocort. There’s also prescription
nasal sprays depending on how bad the severity
of your symptoms are. There’s one other type
of medication that works for allergies called Singulair. That also helps allergies and asthma. Now if your symptoms are
year-round for longer than two years or seasonal
for more than two years, then you may wanna consider finding out what you’re allergic to
with allergy testing. And once that’s done with skin testing then options are desensitization therapy. And what that means is
exposing you a little bit to what you’re allergic to
over the course of three, even up to five years, so your body can develop desensitization or immunity against
what you’re allergic to. And there’s different ways
of getting immunotherapy. You can get allergy shots. And now there’s a novel way to desensitize your immune system with allergy drops which are
given underneath the tongue.
